A Private Instrument Rating (PIFR) is a fantastic rating for private pilots who would like to fly in more conditions than what Visual Flight Rules (VFR) allows for. It authorises the holder to act as a pilot in command of flights under Instrument Flights Rules (IFR) in a single-pilot aircraft with MTOW of 5700kg or less, based on what endorsements are completed as part of the course. The Private IFR course is offered for single or multi-engine and utilises practical training in the simulator as well as the actual aircraft. To complete Private IFR you must hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or higher (CPL, ATPL).

A basic Private Instrument Rating (PIFR) still restricts the licence holder to VFR when flying under Lowest Safe Altitude (LSALT). There are a range of endorsements that you can add, based on the type of flying you want to do and the locations you will likely be flying to/from. The Learn To Fly Private IFR course package includes VOR/LLZ and GNSS En-route Navigation Endorsements (+ NDB for eligible aircraft), RNP 2D Approach Endorsement, 1 IFR Departure Endorsement, and up to 2 Approach Endorsements of your choice (from STAR, NDB, VOR/LLZ, DME/GNSS, and ILS). We also offer a package for pilots who want to be able to fly at night, that includes a Night IFR Endorsement. 1. Prerequisite & Orientation
To complete this course you must hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or higher (CPL, ATPL). Your orientation will include an introduction to the airport, airspace, aircraft fleet, LTF processes and policies, and our facilities.

2. IREX Theory
A pass in IREX Theory is also required to complete the Private IFR course. We offer an online IREX Theory course that includes both theory training and the exam. Or you can choose to do a face-to-face course for an additional cost.

3. Private IFR Ground School
Theory content is customised based on the endorsements you choose to include.

4. Private IFR Flight Training
Practical flight training for PIFR is conducted in our state-of-the-art flight simulators as well as in your chosen aircraft type. The content is customised based on what endorsements you have chosen to include in your training.

5. Private IFR Flight Test
The PIFR flight test involves 2.5-3 hours of flying, demonstrating the theory and practical knowledge you have learnt during the course for the PIFR endorsements you have chosen.
